SEXUAL ABUSE IN SCHOOLS IS A NATIONAL CRISIS

This week HBO released “Surviving Ohio State,” a powerful documentary produced by George Clooney—six years in the making.
Six years of survivors holding their breath. Six years of building trust, gathering testimony, confronting institutions, refusing to quit. Last night, I watched it too—with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. Because perhaps more than most, I know this journey.
What struck me—beyond the immediate tragedy—was just how hard it is to get these stories told. It took George Clooney, 24 producers, and the full force of HBO to bring this predator’s story to the screen.
Now, let me bring you closer to home.
We are in our fifth year of documenting Open Secret. We’ve been carrying a story much larger than the one I had anticipated at the start. Similar to Surviving Ohio State, our film doesn’t just reveal what happened—it exposes how predators operate for decades, the key role enablers play, and how easily it could have been stopped with the right people in key positions.
The main difference between our films, is that Surviving Ohio State focuses on a single predator. Ours show multiple offenders. We expose the systemic failure that allowed these children to suffer—one rooted in fear, silence, unchecked power and the betrayal of countless enablers.
Our thanks go out to you—for your donations, your investment, your belief, your unwavering support—we’re almost there. We’ve completed filming. We’ve begun editing. And we are sprinting toward the finish line.
Let me say this plainly:
If we raise these final funds, Open Secret will be released this year.
$50,000 would enable us to complete our edit.
Survivors and families have entrusted us with their stories. They’ve waited long enough. And in this moment, we have a rare opportunity: to step into the momentum this subject is finally gaining, to add our voice to the national reckoning in support of child safety in our schools.
Institutions are still hiring lawyers. Still searching for loopholes to evade accountability. But survivors are stepping forward. Statutes of limitations are shifting. The tide is turning. We must keep the pressure on.
This film is very personal to me. Not because I was abused in school—I wasn’t—but because I believe deeply that we don’t need to be harmed directly to be responsible for what we see. If something is wrong, we can always ask: Can I help make this right?
So today, we ask you again—because it’s necessary:
